El Hierro, an island with soul
Shore excursion from port of La Estaca, Spain
- Duration 4h
- Activity level medium
What you'll do
Pick up at the port of La Estaca by our guide with a sign.
Our excursion on El Hierro, the youngest, most active and second smallest island of the Canary Islands, highlights the most emblematic places of the island. El Hierro is a Biosphere Reserve, Geopark and the Canary Island with the highest percentage of protected area.
Our visit begins in Puerto de La Estaca and goes up to its capital, Valverde. The interesting history of this island is linked since the 15th century to that of La Gomera and its Counts, as both islands were governed together. A walk through the quiet streets of Valverde allows us to contemplate the church of Santa María de la Concepción, built in the 18th century; in front of the church is the town hall, a beautiful example of traditional Canarian architecture.
We will go up to the Mirador de Isora, which opens a window to the west of the island, Las Playas, Roque de Bonanza and the Parador de Turismo.
From this point we go to the Mirador de La Peña, the building is the work of the Canarian architect César Manrique and was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 2001; a unique enclave from the landscape point of view. Here you can taste not only the wines of Frontera, but also a selection of typical sweets of the island, such as the quesadilla (not included).
We will cross the summit with its pine forests and Laurisilva until we reach the Joapira and the bell tower of the church of "La Candelaria" in Frontera.
The next stop will be at the natural pools of "La Maceta" one of the many wonderful examples of natural pools and bathing areas of this island.
We do not leave Frontera without visiting "the smallest hotel in the world" and then drive through one of the longest tunnels in the Canary Islands to head to Puerto de La Estaca for the farewell.
