Discovering Gran Canaria
Shore excursion from port of Stockholm, Spain
- Duration 5h
- Activity level low
What you'll do
Upon your cruise arrival, your guide will be waiting for you at the port, holding a Shore2Shore sign.
We will explore a small part of Gran Canaria, the third-largest of the Canary Islands — a paradise island we’ll visit for five hours, discovering Las Palmas and the lush Canarian Botanical Garden “Viera y Clavijo.”
We’ll head to the historic district of Vegueta to visit Plaza Mayor de Santa Ana, one of the most iconic places in Las Palmas, located next to the most important building in Canarian architecture, the Cathedral of the Canaries — a perfect spot to take photos with the famous dogs of Gran Canaria and admire the façade with its imposing twin towers.
We’ll then continue to another emblematic site, the Columbus House Museum (Casa de Colón), once the Governor’s residence, visited by Christopher Columbus during his first voyage in 1492 to request help repairing his ship, La Pinta. The museum houses a rich cartographic collection of the Canary Archipelago, as well as facsimiles and maps related to the conquest and colonization of the Americas, illustrating how the European worldview changed. Columbus was just the beginning — after him came new lands, oceans, cultures, riches, and foods unveiled to Europe.
Next, we’ll visit the first public market built in the Canary Islands, the Central Market of Las Palmas or Vegueta Market, dating back to 1856, where we’ll enjoy the vast selection of local fruits and vegetables and soak in the atmosphere and history of the place.
You’ll have around 45 minutes of free time to enjoy a coffee or do some shopping in Vegueta.
The Guiniguada ravine runs through one of the island’s most beautiful spots: the Viera y Clavijo Botanical Garden, the largest in Spain and among the finest in the world. A walk through its 27 hectares reveals the rich and diverse flora of the Canary Islands. Located in the capital of Gran Canaria, in the island’s northeast, it features exotic plant species and more than 500 endemic plants, some endangered.
We’ll end our visit at the city’s Las Canteras Beach, where the renowned architect Óscar Tusquets designed the impressive Alfredo Kraus Auditorium, home of the Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra.
At the end of the excursion, we’ll return to the port for farewell.
