Discovering Gran Canaria
Shore excursion from port of Las Palmas, Spain
- Duration 5h
- Activity level low
What you'll do
Upon arrival of your cruise, the guide will be waiting for you at the port, identified with the Shore2Shore sign.
We will visit a small part of Gran Canaria, which is the third largest island of the Canary Islands. A paradisiacal island that we will explore for 5 hours. Las Palmas and the lush Canary Botanical Garden "Viera y Clavijo".
We will head to the historic center of Vegueta to visit Santa Ana’s Main Square, one of the most emblematic places in the city of Las Palmas, located next to the most important building of Canarian architecture, the Canary Cathedral, a strategic spot to take photos with the famous dogs of Gran Canaria and admire the façade with its imposing twin towers.
We continue our walk to another city landmark, the Casa de Colón Museum; the Governor’s House that Christopher Columbus visited during his first voyage in 1492, in order to request help for repairing his ship, La Pinta. The museum holds a rich cartographic collection of the Canary Archipelago, which together with facsimiles and maps related to the conquest and colonization of America, help to understand the change in the world’s conception. Christopher Columbus is only the beginning; after him, new lands, oceans, cultural groups, riches, and foods were revealed to Europe.
Continuing our tour, we will visit the first supply market built in the Canary Islands. The Vegueta Market, dating back to 1856, where we will delight in the vast selection of local fruits and vegetables… and breathe in the atmosphere and history of the place.
We will have about 45 minutes free to enjoy a coffee or some shopping in Vegueta.
The Guiniguada ravine crosses what is undoubtedly such a wonderful corner that leaves no one indifferent: the Viera y Clavijo Botanical Garden, the largest in Spain and among the best in the world. Strolling through its 27 hectares allows you to discover the varied and extensive flora that the Canary archipelago can boast. Located in the capital of Gran Canaria, in the northeast of the island, it houses exotic and incredible plant species and more than 500 endemic plants, some endangered.
Finally, we end the visit at the capital’s beach of "Las Canteras", where the famous architect Óscar Tusquets designed the imposing "Alfredo Kraus" auditorium, home to the Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra.
At the end of the excursion, we will return to the port for the farewell.
