Kristiansand, the capital of the South of Norway was founded in 1641 by King Christian IX and in 1991 it celebrated its 375 years of history, being the hub of southern Norway's trade. What better way to explore the center of Kristiansand, with its colorful houses and interesting history than by joining our guided city walk?
Kristiansand, the capital of the South, was partially destroyed by the bombings of 1940. The reconstruction has given rise to a new image of the city with modern buildings of different colors.
We will start our walk on the pier and the first stop will be the fish market where we can see all the typical local specialties. We will then continue walking through the city center, passing by the cathedral and the local market. The oldest part of the city has many characteristics such as right-angled streets. The city is also known as Kvadraturen in Norwegian. Part of this area is Posebyen which is made up of one of the largest sets of low wooden houses in Northern Europe.
Our guide will explain the history of the great fire that the city suffered and destroyed half of the houses and will also show us how the locals have managed to build small specialty boutiques and cafes in this part of the old town.
At the end of the excursion, return to the port and farewell.
