Visit to the Ruins of Pompeii
Shore excursion from port of Salerno, Italy
- Duration 6h
- Activity level medium
What you'll do
The ruins of Pompeii are a unique place that you can visit with this shore excursion from the port of Salerno.
At the port, our Shore2Shore team will be waiting to welcome you and begin the bus journey to the Roman city buried by the lava of Mount Vesuvius.
At the foot of Mount Vesuvius, we find the archaeological site of Pompeii. We start the tour at Porta Marina, the gate to the economic and political center of the city.
The guide will lead us throughout the walking tour, evoking the history and experience of a typical day in ancient times.
Pompeii is a magnificent example of life in the year 79 AD. It was precisely that year, on August 24th, when the earth shook and Vesuvius unleashed all its fury on the area, after 1800 years of inactivity.
During our tour of the site, we will find houses, temples, and villas with mosaic floors and frescoed walls. We will see what luxury mansions and the fabulous art of the wealthy aristocrats looked like, who came to Pompeii to escape the crisis in Rome. The houses were designed around an inner garden, with few windows to the outside. We will visit one of the more modest houses and also explore the ancient baths, temples, theaters, and markets.
The city of Pompeii was buried by lava and ash from Mount Vesuvius, although archaeological excavations that began in the 17th century have led to the recovery of countless invaluable remains. Pompeii has much to offer: streets nearly 2000 years old, a rich history, and the sensation of traveling back in time for a few hours.
At the end of the Pompeii excursion, we will return by bus to the port of Salerno for the cruise passengers to embark and say goodbye.
