Syracuse, memories of Neapolis and a walk through Ortigia Island
Shore excursion from port of Syracuse, Italy
- Duration 4h
- Activity level medium
What you'll do
After disembarking, our guide along with an assistant holding a Shore2Shore sign will pick us up at the port of Syracuse.
On this cruise excursion, we will visit two of the most important historic settlements in Sicily located in Syracuse.
The monumental archaeological remains will give us an idea of what Syracuse was like, one of the oldest metropolises in all of Europe, founded in ancient times by the Corinthians, shortly after the founding of Rome, in 734 B.C.
The tour will begin with a visit to the Neapolis Archaeological Park, considered one of the most important archaeological sites in Sicily due to its antiquity and rich cultural heritage, having been traversed by both Greeks and Ottomans, as it was a strategic point for war. We will admire some of its most famous attractions, such as the Greek Theatre, the Roman Amphitheatre, and the famous “Ear of Dionysius,” a cave with a strange and unique echo, carved into the “Latomia del Paradiso”, ancient prison-quarries of stone.
After a brief free time for photos, we will transfer to Ortigia Island, from where we will continue the excursion on foot. This small piece of petrified history houses some of the oldest constructions of classical Greece, as it was the first known settlement from which life in Sicily emerged and which now remains as the historic center of the city. We will be transported back to the Doric era to see the Temples of Apollo and Athena, the Arethusa Fountain, and more, all part of the legacy left by the ancient Greco-Roman settlers.
At the end of the tour, we will walk back to the cruise port for farewell and subsequent boarding.
