What you'll do

We will begin our tour at the impressive walls of the ancient city and its religious heart: Piazza dei Miracoli, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and considered one of the most important medieval art complexes in the world. Here we will admire the famous monumental complex formed by the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta (Duomo), the Baptistery of St. John the Baptist, the Monumental Cemetery (Camposanto), the Bell Tower, and, of course, the iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa.

We will then continue along Via Santa Maria, the historic artery that connected Piazza dei Miracoli with the ancient city. Along this charming street, we will see the Orphanage, the Ferdinandeo College, and the Church of San Giorgio ai Tedeschi, until reaching the Church of San Sisto in Corte Vecchia, where the ancient Palace of the Lombard Gastaldo once stood.

Our walk will then take us to Piazza dei Cavalieri di Santo Stefano, dominated by its church and the Gualandi Tower, famous for the tragic story of Count Ugolino, immortalized in Dante’s Divine Comedy.

Passing through the arch of the Palazzo del Bonomo, we will continue along Via della Faggiola, known for having been the residence of the great poet Giacomo Leopardi.

We will finish the tour by crossing Piazza Arcivescovado to return to Piazza dei Miracoli, where you will have free time to enjoy the surroundings before continuing our journey to Lucca.

LUCCA

Lucca is a true medieval city, and its historic center has preserved the original layout from that period, with narrow cobbled streets and limited vehicle access. For this reason, the bus will park outside the historic center, and we will enjoy a pleasant walking tour into the heart of the city, allowing us to discover its most authentic essence.

We will begin our visit along Via San Paolino, where the birthplace of one of Italy’s most famous opera composers, Giacomo Puccini, is located. In nearby Piazza Cittadella, we will admire the statue of the creator of La Bohème, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, and Turandot.

We will then continue to Piazza San Michele, the former Roman forum, where the Church of San Michele, a magnificent example of Pisan-Lucchese architecture, and the Palazzo Pretorio (1492), the former seat of the Podestà, stand.

Crossing the city’s main square, Piazza Napoleone, we will reach the Cathedral of San Martino (Duomo), renowned for its elegant medieval façade and its enigmatic stone-carved labyrinth.

Our route continues along Via Fillungo, one of Lucca’s most emblematic streets, famous for its medieval atmosphere, palaces, and towers. Here stands the impressive Guinigi Tower, crowned with its characteristic trees at the top.

We will then stroll through the famous Piazza dell’Anfiteatro, one of the most unique squares in Italy, built over the remains of a 2nd-century Roman amphitheater, once the site of public gatherings and gladiator games.

We will conclude the visit in front of the Church of San Frediano, unique for its spectacular mosaic-decorated façade.
After the tour, you will have free time before returning to your ship.
