Shore excursion from port of Palermo, Italy
- Duration 3h 30min
- Activity level low
What you'll do
Discover the city of Palermo, its history evident in its elegant avenues and baroque palaces, its culture revealing a city that is chaotic and captivating at the same time.
This walking tour, specially designed for cruise passengers, begins right at the port of Palermo, where the guide will be waiting for you, identified with the Shore2Shore sign.
Palermo has been a key player in the beginning of Mediterranean civilization and was once considered one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.
This walking tour shows you a slice of history of a city that has been ruled by Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Arabs, and Normans. Each people left their mark on its famous monuments.
The first stop will be Piazza Verdi to admire the Teatro Massimo, one of the largest theaters in Italy and the third largest in Europe.
We will continue to the beautiful Piazza Quattro Canti, a square that is the meeting point of two of Palermo’s main streets: Corso Vittorio Emanuele and Via Maqueda. Here, you will be captivated by the facades of its four baroque palaces, the lower part of each palace featuring a sculpture representing the four seasons.
From the square, we will continue our excursion to see the Fontana Pretoria, a fountain in Tuscan style, also nicknamed the "fountain of shame" (la Vergogna). It is called this because of the various figures adorning and splashing around it, showing their nudity.
We proceed to Piazza Bellini, the heart of the city. Here we can admire the facades of the Church of the Martorana and the Church of San Cataldo (both temples with exterior visits only due to liturgical celebrations).
The last stop of our tour of Palermo before returning to the cruise will be the majestic Palermo Cathedral, notable for its heterogeneous style, as it was a church, then a mosque, and a church again. In its architecture, we can appreciate Arab, Gothic, and Baroque elements.
At the end of the excursion, we will return to the port for the farewell.
