Essential Rome and Spanish Steps

Discover the majestic capital of Italy with this excursion to ROME, specially designed for cruise passengers. Departing from the port of CIVITAVECCHIA, our accompanying staff, identified with the Shore2Shore sign, will give you a warm welcome.

From CIVITAVECCHIA, we will begin a journey of approximately one and a half hours towards ROME, crossing the picturesque countryside north of the city. Upon arrival, we will meet our guide, who will accompany us throughout the tour to show us the wonders of the ETERNAL CITY.

We will begin our tour through the heart of ROME, passing by the historic AURELIAN WALLS and the distinctive PYRAMID OF CAIUS CESTIUS.

Our first stop will be the iconic COLOSSEUM OF ROME, the city’s undisputed symbol. The bus will drop us off in the surrounding area so that we can continue the tour on foot. You will have the opportunity to admire its impressive façade and learn some of its secrets while taking unforgettable photos. We will then continue along the magnificent VIA DEI FORI IMPERIALI, lined with the remains of Ancient Rome, until reaching the impressive PIAZZA VENEZIA, the city’s urban heart. Here stands the majestic monument known as the VITTORIANO or ALTAR OF THE FATHERLAND, originally built to commemorate the unification of Italy and later dedicated to those who fell in the wars. Don’t forget to ask the guide about the curious story of the dinners held inside the horse sculpture.

Next to PIAZZA VENEZIA, you will be able to admire the emblematic COLUMN OF TRAJAN, a testament to the power of the ROMAN EMPIRE. Leaving Ancient Rome behind, we will enter the charming narrow streets of the historic center, where we will discover the BASILICA OF THE HOLY APOSTLES (external visit), of Byzantine origin, on our way to the TREVI FOUNTAIN. This is the perfect place to admire the famous fountain and enjoy a delicious gelato. We will see the TREVI FOUNTAIN, but we will not access the paid area designated for coin tossing, as our visit will be exterior only.

We will continue strolling through the streets of the historic center, where we will find numerous noble palaces and churches. We will reach SPANISH SQUARE, one of the most famous squares in ROME, home to the Baroque FOUNTAIN OF THE BARACCIA and the monumental SPANISH STEPS (TRINITÀ DEI MONTI). We will pass by the EMBASSY OF SPAIN TO THE HOLY SEE.

Walking through PIAZZA COLONNA, we will admire the COLUMN OF MARCUS AURELIUS and PALAZZO MONTECITORIO, seat of the CHAMBER OF DEPUTIES. We will continue until reaching the impressive PANTHEON, one of the city’s architectural jewels.

Our next stop will be PIAZZA NAVONA, the grandest of the Renaissance squares, where you can admire its fountains and vibrant atmosphere. After a brief photo stop, we will return to our bus to head back to CIVITAVECCHIA, after enjoying a magical day suspended in time, between the splendor of the EMPIRE and the grandeur of the PAPACY, in the most beautiful city in the world.

GENERAL INFORMATION

• DURATION: As this excursion is exclusively for cruise passengers, schedules vary depending on ship arrival times and port stay, as well as the availability of assistance, guide, and transportation. The ROME tour for cruise passengers usually lasts between 8 and 10 hours.

The order of visits may vary without prior notice due to unforeseen circumstances (ship arrival time, visiting hours of points of interest, etc.).

• As of January 1st, 2019, a new traffic regulation law came into force in ROME, which may affect certain traffic access points and parking areas. The entire itinerary of the ROME tour will be carried out on foot and is of long duration. Some walking distances are quite long; therefore, the tour has a medium level of difficulty and is not suitable for passengers with walking difficulties, wheelchair users, or those traveling with very young children.
• Appropriate clothing is mandatory when visiting places of worship.
  Comfortable footwear is recommended.
