What you'll do
From the port of Rhodes, we will visit the historic center of Rhodes on foot.
The Marina Gate welcomes us to the best-preserved medieval city in Europe: the old city of Rhodes, a treasure protected within its walls, built in a semicircular shape facing the main harbor.
Through “Hippokratous” street we will reach the square of the same name, the main square of the medieval city of the “Burgo” or “Chora” of Rhodes. In the center of “Hippokratous” Square stands a Turkish fountain surrounded by various shops, restaurants, and businesses. Noteworthy is the building of the “Castellanía,” a 16th-century stone construction with a large exterior staircase. Under its arches, on the ground floor, was the “Merchants’ Exchange,” where commercial activities took place, while the first floor was the seat of the Criminal Court of the Knights of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, inhabitants of the island since its conquest in the first decade of the 14th century. Today, it houses the public library.
The Kolakio is the citadel within which the complex of buildings born from the presence of the Order of the Knights of Saint John is found, basically comprising the Street of the Knights (Ippoton) that runs from the Knights’ Hospital (now the Archaeological Museum) to the Palace of the Grand Master (optional entrance fee payable on site), the great jewel of the medieval city.
The Street of the Knights is the best-preserved medieval street in Europe and one of the most important in Rhodes.
Hippocrates Square is said to be the nerve center of the historic center of Rhodes, not because it is precisely in the middle, but because it is a strategic point from which three streets depart leading to the three neighborhoods:
- Aristotle Street to the Jewish quarter.
- Socrates Street to the medieval quarter.
- Pythagoras Street to the Turkish or Ottoman quarter.
Along Aristotle Street, we will reach the Hebrew Martyrs Square, decorated in the center with a fountain featuring three bronze seahorses.
Returning to the street of Martyrs Square, this time to the right, we will find the remains of the Church of Our Lady of the Burgo and at the end the Gate of the Virgin Mary of Victory.
This route can also be done in reverse and is equally attractive.
After the tour, we will return to the port for the farewell.
