Visit to Oia and Fira

Shore excursion from port of Santorini, Greece

  • Duration 4h 30min
  • Activity level low

What you'll do

Once the cruise ship arrives at the port, you must disembark as soon as possible, as disembarkation tends to be very slow at this port. The company's boats will take you to the old port (in Fira), where the boats leave you, the guide will be waiting for you, identified with the sign "SHORE2SHORE". Together with the guide, we will take another boat that will take you to the Athinios port. During this crossing, we will be able to see the magnificence of the cliffs with their color changes, showing the reliefs of petrified lava. If the group is fewer than 30 people, we will make this journey by funicular.

Once at the new port, we will take the bus and go up to the top of the cliffs. During our panoramic walk, we will observe from the outside the picturesque village of Pyrgos Kallistis, located on the top of a hill next to Mount Profitis Ilias. It is surrounded by vineyards that produce the famous Assyrtiko white wine. Although we will not make any stops or visit its interior, from the bus we can admire its urban ensemble with medieval streets housing wine shops, taverns, galleries, and boutiques. There you will also find the Santorini Museum of the Past, which explores traditional island life, and the Museum of Icons and Ecclesiastical Objects, located in the chapel of Agia Triada.

We will continue enjoying the panoramic view of the Caldera, a volcanic crater 3,000 years old. We head towards the most photographed village in Greece, Oia, a picturesque path, with cliffs on one side and the sea on the other. Located at the northern tip of the island, it offers the most beautiful view of Santorini; just below is the Ammoudi beach, and on the other side is the crater with its volcanic islands. We will discover the typical Santorini architecture, with its cave houses on volcanic ground, white walls, blue domes shining in the sun, and its neoclassical past. Oia today houses a cultural center, art galleries of all kinds, and Greek artworks. Many shops sell local crafts, jewelry, and other items. This is where we will have free time to discover the beauty of the village and stroll through its streets.

We continue towards Fira, the island's capital and the most important village in the area. Fira is perched on the edge of a cliff 260 m high and offers a magnificent view over the submerged volcano. Its uniqueness lies in the white-painted houses, churches with blue domes, and sun-drenched terraces. We will pass through the Catholic neighborhood, under the arches of the Dominican sisters' convent, the oldest neighborhood of the village, Firostefani.

At the end of the excursion, we will enjoy free time to explore this unique experience and stroll through its shopping area. The return to the company's boat pickup point will be on your own.
