What you'll do
Pickup at the port by our guide identified with the Shore2Shore sign at the port of Patmos.
The island of Patmos is located at the northwestern end of the Dodecanese archipelago in the Aegean Sea, between the islands of Ikaria (also known as the island of longevity) and Leros.
Once we arrive at the port of Skala, we will head to our first visit, which will be the Monastery of Saint John, situated at the top of the hill, amidst the picturesque white houses that form a striking contrast beneath its imposing presence. Built by Christodoulos Santísima, Servant of Christ, in 1088, it features thick walls crowned with a total of eight chapels. It houses a stone courtyard with arches through which we can see the frescoes that adorn the entrance to the chapel.
The museum has a magnificent collection of chalices, crowns, and jeweled crosses. Additionally, it possesses old manuscripts dating back to 1073, icons, and religious paintings, including an original by El Greco.
We will continue the tour with a visit to the Grotto of Saint John, built around the cave where Saint John lived for two years while writing what many believe to be the Apocalypse (circa AD 95/97). It is said that he received his revelation in this cave and there wrote the last book of the New Testament.
After this impressive visit, we will head back to the port to say goodbye to this historic place and to our guide.
