Patmos Monastery and St John's Cave
Shore excursion from port of Patmos, Greece
- Duration 4h
- Activity level low
What you'll do
Our guide will meet you at the port with a Shore2Shore sign.
The island of Patmos is located in the northwest corner of the Dodecanese archipelago in the Aegean Sea between the islands of Ikaria and Leros.
Our first visit will be to the Monastery of St John, located at the top of the hill, in the middle of the picturesque white houses that form a surprising contrast under its imposing presence. It was built by Christodoulos Santisima, Servant of Christ, in 1088. It has thick walls crowned with a total of eight chapels. It has a stone patio, with arches through which we can see the frescoes that adorn the entrance to the chapel.
The museum houses a magnificent collection of jewels, crowns and crosses. In addition, there are old writings dating back to 1073, religious icons and paintings, including an original by El Greco.
We will continue the tour with the visit to the Grotto of St John, built around the cave where St John lived for two years while writing the Apocalypse (d.D 95/97). It is said that he received his revelation in this cave and wrote the last book of the New Testament.
Then, we will go to the port of Skala where our excursion will end.
Return to the port.
