Mycenae and Nafplio

Shore excursion from port of Nafplio, Greece

  • Duration 4h
  • Activity level medium

What you'll do

Upon arrival of your cruise, departure from the port where the guide will be waiting, identified with the Shore2Shore sign.

We will begin the excursion from the Port of Nauplia (Nafplio), one of the most beautiful and romantic cities in Greece. We head towards Mycenae, crossing the beautiful fields full of orange and lemon trees in the Argolis region.

Arriving at Mycenae, we visit its imposing ruins. For 400 years this kingdom was the most powerful in Greece as it dominated Argolis and exerted great influence over the other Mycenaean kingdoms.

In Mycenae, myth and history are closely linked. According to Homer in his epics The Iliad and The Odyssey, the city was founded by the son of Danaë and Zeus; Perseus, the hero who killed Medusa. The dynasty of Perseus was overthrown by Pelops, one of the sons of Tantalus. Probably, the royal house of Atreus descended from Tantalus, although myth and history intertwine and the genealogies are so complex that no one could say for certain. Whatever the genealogical line, in the times of Agamemnon, the house of Atreus was the most powerful of the Achaeans, as Homer called the Greeks. This house had an unfortunate end, thus fulfilling the curse that weighed upon it.

Acropolis of Mycenae

We will enter the citadel of Mycenae through the spectacular Lion Gate. Built with large stone blocks and crowned by a huge relief of two rampant lionesses, the emblem of the house of Atreus. Leaving the Acropolis, we visit the monumental beehive tomb, the Treasury of Atreus.

We return to Nauplia, the city that enchants with its Greek, Venetian, and Turkish/Ottoman airs. It was the first capital of Greece, a very clean and orderly city with 3 fortresses and narrow alleys full of restaurants and shops decorated with flowers and staircases.

A large clay gate welcomes you to the charming old town. On the way to the historic center, several stops will be made; we will see the Greek parliament, the Venetian building that today houses the city’s archaeological museum, and its 3 fortresses: the oldest, Acronauplia, which protected the lower area; the Bourtzi, which floats in the sea, a bastion against the Turkish attack; and the Palamidi, built by the Venetians to protect themselves from them.

At the end of the excursion, we return to the port of Nauplia, where you can enjoy free time on a dreamlike stroll through its attractive narrow alleys, flanked by elegant Venetian houses and neoclassical mansions with flowered balconies.

At the end of the excursion, return to port and farewell.
