Katakolon Olympia
Shore excursion from port of Katakolo, Greece
- Duration 4h
- Activity level low
What you'll do
Upon arrival of your cruise, the guide will be waiting for you at the port, identified with the Shore2Shore sign.
We will relive the excitement of the first Olympic Games, which were held from 776 BC until 393 AD. The Olympic Sanctuary of Zeus is a place of spectacular beauty, located in the heart of nature and surrounded by the Alpheus and Kladeos rivers.
We will visit the athletes' training areas (gymnasium, palestra) as well as the most emblematic temples; the Temple of Zeus, which houses one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, and the Temple of Hera, which holds the altar of the Olympic flame, rekindled every four years to mark the start of the Olympic Games. Following our guide, we will walk a short distance to the Olympic stadium, where we can test our athletic endurance.
After our tour of the ancient athletic world, we will continue with the second part of the excursion. We will board the bus that will take us to the parking lot of the Archaeological Museum of Olympia (entry fee payable on site), where you can see, among other pieces, the marble statues from the Temple of Zeus and the only statue of Hermes, carved by Praxiteles, an important ancient Greek sculptor.
Afterwards, we will enjoy some free time before returning to the port for the farewell.
