Charming towns Le Castellet and Sanary

Shore excursion from port of Toulon, France

  • Duration 4h 30min
  • Activity level low

What you'll do

At the arrival of your cruise ship, our Shore2Shore team will welcome you at the port exit, less than 5 minutes from the ship, clearly identified with the SHORE2SHORE sign.

We will begin our excursion with a panoramic drive of approximately 30 minutes through the Provençal landscape, heading towards one of the most beautiful and charming villages in southern France.

Le Castellet, medieval jewel of Provence

Situated on a hill and surrounded by olive groves, almond trees and prestigious vineyards, Le Castellet is a magnificent example of a perfectly preserved medieval village. Its privileged location offers fantastic views and places it very close to the famous Paul Ricard Formula 1 Circuit.

We will enjoy a guided walking tour through its historic centre, discovering from the outside its cobbled streets, walls and corners full of history, while the guide explains the evolution and the main monuments of the village. After the explanation, there will be free time to stroll, take photographs and visit craft shops and local product stores.

Main points of interest (external visit):

Church of Saint-Sauveur of the Transfiguration, 10th century, enlarged in the 13th century.
Castle of Le Castellet, also from the 10th century, rebuilt in the 15th century under the reign of the Good King René, son of Yolande of Aragon. Today it houses the town hall and offers a square with a spectacular panoramic balcony.

Sanary-sur-Mer, maritime tradition and cultural spirit

Back on the coach, we will head towards the coast to discover Sanary-sur-Mer, a charming fishing village that has become a seaside resort, especially lively in summer.

Sanary is closely linked to Jacques Cousteau, commander of the French Navy and pioneer of modern scuba diving, who lived and worked in the area. In addition, it was a place of residence and refuge for great international writers such as Thomas Mann, before and after the Second World War.

We will enjoy a guided tour of the harbour and the historic centre, viewing from the outside its most representative buildings, followed by free time to enjoy the atmosphere, stroll by the sea or relax on a terrace.

Main points of interest (external visit):

Church of Saint Nazaire, 17th century, enlarged in the 19th century, today dedicated to Saint Peter, patron saint of fishermen.

Medieval Tower, the oldest building in the village, built in the year 1300. With its 21 metres in height, it was a prison in the 16th century and currently houses the Frédéric Mistral Submarine Museum, closely linked to Jacques Cousteau.

After enjoying inland Provence and the Mediterranean coast, we will return calmly to the port, with enough time for re-embarkation and without rushing, always respecting the cruise schedule.
