Walk through the Heart of Dubrovnik

Shore excursion , Croatia

  • Duration 4h
  • Activity level low

What you'll do

Upon arrival of your cruise, pick-up by our guide, identified with the Shore2Shore sign at the port.

We will begin our bus tour with a panoramic stop at the top of the mountain, from where we will have a spectacular view of the walled city. It will be the perfect moment to make a photo stop and admire Dubrovnik, known as the "Pearl of the Adriatic".

We will continue with our guide towards the iconic Pile Gate, one of the main entrances to the old city. From here we will enter Stradun, the most famous street in Dubrovnik. This pedestrian street, about 300 meters long, is one of the main axes of the old town and houses numerous monuments, shops, cafes, and restaurants.

Interestingly, this street did not exist during the Middle Ages, as it was previously a marshy canal that was drained in the 13th century, later becoming the heart of the city.

During our walking tour of the Old Town, we will learn about some of Dubrovnik’s most important monuments.

The guide will tell us about the Dominican Monastery, a building that combines Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque styles due to its long construction process. After the devastating earthquake of 1667, much of its facade had to be rebuilt.

He will also talk about the Dubrovnik Cathedral, built on the remains of an earlier church destroyed by the 1667 earthquake.

During the walk, we will also see the Sponza Palace, a building from 1521 that has survived intact to this day. Its architecture combines Gothic and Renaissance elements and, throughout its history, it has had various uses, including school, bank, mint, and customs house.

We will also admire the Church of St. Blaise, built in 1715 and considered an excellent example of Venetian Baroque, as well as the Onofrio Fountain, built in 1438 by the Neapolitan architect Onofrio della Cava.

Finally, we will observe the Rector’s Palace, which was the residence of the government and the rector during the Republic of Dubrovnik.

After the guided tour, you will have free time to explore the Old Town at your own pace.

During this free time, clients who wish may enter the Dominican Monastery and/or the Cathedral by paying the corresponding entrance fee directly. These visits are completely optional and are not included in the excursion price.

The guide will inform the group about this possibility and will be available for those clients who wish to visit any of these sites during the free time. It is not necessary to request or book these tickets in advance.

At the end of the excursion, we will return to the port.
