With our specialized guide, we will begin a fascinating tour of Zadar, a city that originated more than three thousand years ago as a small settlement and has today become the cultural epicenter of Dalmatia. Its old town, with narrow alleys, historic monuments, and ancient walls, offers us a unique immersion into the history and art of the region.
We will start our visit with the Cathedral of St. Anastasia, an impressive example of Romanesque architecture. In its apse lies the sarcophagus of the saint, making it one of the great jewels of Zadar’s religious heritage.
Next, we will head to the Church of St. Donatus, an architectural symbol of Zadar, built in the 9th century by Bishop Saint Donatus. Its circular plan and the three naves that compose it make it one of the most outstanding churches of the eastern Adriatic, with a unique and monumental character.
Continuing our tour, we will arrive at the Church of St. Mary, a Romanesque work from the 12th century built by the Hungarian-Croatian King Koloman. The church features a bell tower and a convent on its upper floor, where relics and objects of great historical value are exhibited.
One of the most interesting stops will be the permanent exhibition "The Gold and Silver of Zadar", which houses a valuable collection of goldsmith pieces dating from the 8th century to the Baroque, as well as works by Miroslav Krleza, one of Croatia’s most important writers.
During the tour, we will also pass by the Greeting to the Sun, a unique work by architect Nikola Bašić. This innovative installation, a glass circle, absorbs sunlight during the day to transform it into a spectacular light show at night, creating a magical atmosphere along Zadar’s waterfront.
Finally, we will stop at the Sea Organ, another work by the same architect, consisting of hollow tubes hidden beneath marble steps. When the sea waves touch these tubes, they produce musical notes, offering visitors a unique sensory experience while resting and enjoying the stunning sea view.
This tour will take us through the rich history of Zadar, its architectural heritage, and its innovative contemporary artworks, leaving you with a deep appreciation for this jewel of the Dalmatian coast.
