Walking tour through the heart of Split
Shore excursion from port of Split, Croatia
- Duration 2h 30min
- Activity level low
What you'll do
Upon arrival of your cruise, you will be picked up at the port by our guide, identified with the Shore2Shore sign, from where we will walk on foot to the main points of interest.
We will admire the statue of Bishop Gregory of Nin (10th century), located in front of the Golden Gate of the Diocletian's Palace, a grandiose work surrounded by the legend that touching the big toe will bring good luck.
The Golden Gate is one of the main entrances to the walls of Split. The Old Town of Split is built around and on top of the spectacular Roman Palace erected by the Roman Emperor Diocletian (born in Salona, today Solin) in the 4th century.
We will visit the Cathedral of St. Domnius, a complex composed of the church, the Roman imperial mausoleum, and the bell tower. The church is exclusively dedicated to the Virgin Mary and the bell tower to St. Domnius. The Cathedral was originally the mausoleum of Emperor Diocletian, although it was converted into a cathedral in the 8th century and has been a World Heritage Site since 1979.
We continue to the Temple of Jupiter, dedicated to the god Jupiter of the ancient Romans, located near the Peristyle, the central square of the palace, and built at the same time as Diocletian's Palace. At the entrance to the temple, we will find two sphinxes sent from Egypt by order of the emperor.
We will stroll through the Jewish quarter, the Ghetto, and admire its synagogue, one of the most beautiful in Europe.
Our excursion ends in the old town. The old town is a short distance from the port and you can easily return on foot.
