Split walking tour
Shore excursion from port of Limassol, Croatia
- Duration 2h 30min
- Activity level low
What you'll do
Upon arrival of your cruise, you will be met at the port by our guide, identified with a Shore2Shore sign, from where we will walk to explore the main points of interest.
We will admire the statue of Bishop Gregory of Nin (10th century), located in front of the Golden Gate of Diocletian’s Palace — a grand monument surrounded by a legend that says touching the big toe brings good luck.
The Golden Gate is one of the main entrances to the walls of Split. The Old Town of Split is built around and over the spectacular Roman Palace erected by the Roman Emperor Diocletian (born in Salona, today Solin) in the 4th century.
We will visit the Cathedral of Saint Domnius (San Duje), a complex consisting of the church, the Roman imperial mausoleum, and the bell tower. The church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, while the bell tower honors Saint Domnius. The cathedral was originally Emperor Diocletian’s mausoleum, later converted into a church in the 8th century, and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.
We will continue towards the Temple of Jupiter, dedicated to the ancient Roman god Jupiter, located near the Peristyle, the central square of the palace. It was built at the same time as Diocletian’s Palace. At the entrance, you will see two sphinxes brought from Egypt by order of the emperor.
We will stroll through the Jewish quarter (the Ghetto) and admire its synagogue, one of the most beautiful in Europe.
Our excursion ends in the Old Town. The Old Town is just a short walk from the port, so you can easily return on foot.
